What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is the care provision of staff to support participants to live a life as safe as possible, and to help implement programs that help clients achieve their NDIS goals. Whether your SIL is in an SDA or a private accommodation, HyCare has trained staff and programs that can assist you to live as independently as possible in a safe environment.
What is Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)?
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), on the other hand, is a housing category that is designed to help participants with extreme functional impairment to live as independently as possible in a safe and supervised environment. HyCare has a large number of SDAs in various stages of build as we work with industry leaders and source private investors to build you a property. We make sure that participants are involved in this process.
SIL and SDA: What’s the Difference?
A simple way to remember it: SIL is the support you receive, SDA is the home you live in. Many participants combine both, receiving SIL supports while living in an SDA property.
| SIL | SDA | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A support service delivered by trained staff | A purpose-built home for very high support needs |
| What it covers | Help with daily tasks: personal care, cooking, medication, and community participation | The dwelling itself: accessible design, safety features, and assistive technology |
| Who it suits | People who need support workers to live independently | People with extreme functional impairment or very high physical support needs |
| Where it happens | Any home: an apartment, unit, mainstream housing, or an SDA property | An NDIS-enrolled, purpose-built property |
| How it is funded | Funded under Core Supports in your NDIS plan | Funded under Capital Supports in your NDIS plan |
Whether you need SIL, SDA, or both, HyCare works with you, your family, and your support coordinator to match the right support with the right home.
